Wardrobe And Visual Credibility Go Together

September 30, 2009 · Posted in Business Grants · Comments Off

When you meet another person you are evaluated first by your dress, the second how you are speaking and third by the words you are speaking. If you are feeling misunderstood, the first place to check is your personal appearance, the clothing that you are wearing, and what you are doing. Next check how you are speaking and then what you are saying.

You either make a statement that is positive or negative. When it comes to others opinions there is very little gray area. First impressions and image management allow you to experience impression management which is a very important skill in the world today.

If you are making the wrong image statement it is easy to be overlooked. That is why being consistent with your image from day to day is so important. The consistency allows you to be more credible to yourself and others.

Visual credibility then allows for the person you are meeting to give you an opportunity to present your information to them. If you are not visually credible, you often do not get an opportunity to present your material. It might be the exact information the person you are meeting needs but, if you are not allowed to present it, they will miss the chance of receiving what they were looking for at the time. Because of the credibility gap, you may never be able to present the information to them.

It is unfortunate that packaging-the way you are dressing-could keep you from being successful in the world when trying to share your information. Consider that any effort in the area of image or image improvement could significantly impact your success.

Many people do not want to be bothered, but if they only knew the difference their image was making, it might give them a reason to reconsider image importance.

Top 4 Fashion Trends for Fall 2009

September 29, 2009 · Posted in Business Grants · Comments Off

The temperatures are beginning to drop and everybody knows that it’s time for new style trends. You may have seen runway shows, celebs being interviewed or photographed by paparazzi time and time again, but it’s quite obvious that both models and celebs are dotting with the latest styles according to season.

So what is “in” for the Fall of 2009?

Well, for starters you might have a flashback when you’ll find the come-backs of some of the past decades’ style trends. But of course, they’ve been upgraded to fit the 21st century’s fashion sense.

The Sculpted shoulders

The 80’s shoulder pad days are back. Resurrected for the fall of 2009 are jackets and tops with padded, and sometimes pointy, shoulders. The trend was initiated by Balmain which is a high-end brand worn by posh celebrities with the likes of Victoria “posh spice” Beckham. Squared-off jackets as well as t-shirts with shoulder pads would soon follow this trend.

Beyonce Knowles was seen wearing a black sequined military jacket with shoulder pads which is another addition to the trend.

1. Funky tights

Printed tights are in right now and these are very inexpensive additions to your growing wardrobe. If you want to put some fun into your boring mini skirt and top ensemble, a patterned pair of tights can bring some life to it.

You can also pair these tights with mini dresses that have above-the-knee lengths. But try not to overwhelm the ensemble by wearing funky or overly-printed tops. Try to balance things out by pairing with plain or one-colored tops.

2. Front-pleated pants

These pants are made for walking… not just the runway, but anywhere. These trousers are reminiscent of the harem styles, but these are cropped and pleated at the front. You can pair these with tucked-in tops to better show-off your entire physique.

If you remember in the previous decades, trousers like these have also existed, however they were longer like your usual pant suits or slacks. These are better worn on casual dates or out-of-towns. They’re also great if you wish a comfy day at work and you can pair them with knitted sweater or a casual top and opened jacket

3. Winter shorts

Now why would anyone wear shorts during the winter? Why not?

Since tights have been around and still showing signs of permanence, why not pair them with shorts that are made especially for the cold weather. Thick tights can help you keep your legs warm, so winter shorts can be cool and hip to wear. Make sure your shorts are dark-colored and made of thick fabrics [i.e. wool] to keep you from the cold.

4. Chunky chokers

You may have seen Louis Vuitton runway models and celebs wearing these chunky chokers everywhere. Many are expecting that this accessory will make waves during this season. Whether you’re wearing t-shirt and jeans, or a chic and sassy dress for an evening date, these chokers can add class to your current wardrobe.

Fall is here and it’s time to liven up your wardrobe with something new. You don’t need too much money when you’re scouting for these top 5 trends for this year’s fall season. Check the nearest mall or online store for sales and good deals so you won’t break your wallet while shopping for the fall.

Business Planning – A Good Business Development Strategy is Crucial for Success

As part of my consulting practice, I read and review business plans written both for venture capitalists and for grant applications. The weakest part of every business plan is always how will the company get from today to “the dream” five years out.

Usually, there is a pretty good description of what will happen in the next six months and a decent description of what will happen in five years, but there is nothing in between.

Technical entrepreneurs have a good handle on what product development they need to do to get the product into a usable form. They understand the costs and the time involved. However, once the product is developed, they seem to be at a loss as to what to do next.

The lack of a business development executive early in the process often leads to the product being developed in a vacuum. There is a bit of a chicken and egg problem here: start-ups don’t feel like they can afford a business development person until they sell product and they can’t figure out how to sell a product without business development.

Also, I’ve noted that a number of engineer or scientist CEOs tend to discount the role of business development, as if the science behind the product is really what sells the product. This is just not true – if it was true, universities would be a lot richer. Read more
