When I Couldn’t Find Tall Trousers To Fit Me, I Set Up My Own Fashion Business

June 25, 2010 · Posted in Fashion Business Loans · Comments Off

There’s been one question that’s lived with me for years. Why aren’t there more trousers for tall, slim men available? Finding trousers I’ve both liked and actually fit me has been a struggle since my teens.

The answer, of course is that tall men are a small market – and tall and thin is even smaller than the well-known association between ‘big’ and ‘tall’. Mainstream high street retailers just aren’t interested in us. Their overheads are high, and they believe there just isn’t enough volume in the market for them.

Where you do find clothes that fit in retail outlets, how many times have you been faced with substantially higher prices than equivalent garments for more averagely proportioned shoppers?

Things are even tougher in the UK and Europe than the US because some global fashion brands manufacture trousers for tall thin men, but don’t make them available on this side of the Atlantic.

A while back, I saw all these difficulties as an opportunity.

Setting up shop online

As the Internet has evolved and more and more people are happy to shop for clothing online, I no longer had to take on the same problems faced by the volume retailers. The higher costs associated with developing and manufacturing ranges for a relatively small marketplace can be offset against the lower costs of operating online.

Setting up my new brand, Alto Clothing, online is the only way I can offer my clothes to people. I’m selling direct, so the extra costs involved in short production runs can be offset against the savings made by eliminating the high street shop. The lower costs associated with the Internet make my business viable.

The opportunity offered by the Internet for Alto Clothing is the same as for many specialist businesses, in all kinds of markets – it lowers costs and increases the potential market size.

Sourcing tall man’s clothing

I have a great looking Web site designed by a central London agency, supported by some very effective Search Engine Optimization. By and large, I’m getting to grips with the online part of my business. But, even though Alto Clothing sells 100% online, the challenges are offline.

Finding suppliers equipped to make the sizes I need, and who have a long-term vision strong enough to set up production runs small enough for a start-up in a niche market, has been, shall we say, interesting.

“200? Don’t you mean 20,000?” became a depressing familiar response as I contacted prospective suppliers. I’ve had to balance the choice between using more expensive European-based suppliers, who are happier to provide smaller quantities with lower-priced far-eastern suppliers who demand larger orders.

And then there are my ethical principles to factor in. I’ve been checking, as much as is possible, that Alto is not choosing suppliers who employ child labour, use questionable Health & Safety standards and other dubious practices.

Luckily, I’ve been able to use my experience both as a consumer and in a previous men’s fashion business to find suppliers who can provide the specialised sizes my customers need.

Lessons for start-ups

Securing the kind of edgy or younger clothes for the vision I have for the Alto Clothing brand continues to be the biggest challenge as Alto grows in its critical first couple of years.

My advice for start-ups, now I’ve been through more than one? Look at all aspects of your business. Try to foresee as many pitfalls as you can, but accept that you can never anticipate them all. The real challenges are quite often in the most surprising places. You just have to tackle them with persistence and enthusiasm; there’s almost certainly a solution there somewhere!

Internet Marketing and Home Business – The Education of an Old Fashioned Business Consultant

May 21, 2010 · Posted in Fashion Business Loans · Comments Off

I thought -“Doing business on the internet is simple – right?”

Have a product of your own to sell, or sell someone else’s – build a website, or have someone build it for you – and you too, can become an instant millionaire working from home in your PJ’s. We’ve all heard these stories and, unfortunately for many, right at this minute the world is full of people in meeting rooms, or on the internet, being convinced that this is indeed fact. It’s not! The odds of you becoming wealthy are not too bad if you apply yourself, learn and apply what you learn to your business, but the odds of you becoming wealthy quickly are about the same as winning the lottery! The sad fact is that most people who try to do business on the internet will not be successful, will ultimately give up, and lose – not make – money on their internet home business.

Doing business on the internet is simple? Yes – and No.

The CONCEPT is simple (in fact it’s the same as for an old fashioned retail store, local service or profession). Have a good product – locate customers or clients who need (and/or want) your product – make these customers or clients aware of your product and convince them of the benefits of your product – make them an offer that convinces them to buy your product or service – make the sale and deliver the product with great service -and finally, turn these customers or clients into missionaries who will tell everyone they know about you and your product. In internet marketing terms; have a good product to sell – have a place to sell it (a website or blog) – attract potential customers or clients to your website or blog – capture the address of these prospects for follow-up – convert these prospects into buyers who will provide references – resell your buyers (much easier and cheaper than getting new customers).

Let’s expand that a little bit:

  • Have a plan – know what you want to do.
  • Do market research to determine what products people want to buy.
  • If you don’t have your own product, select products of others to sell.
  • Build effective platforms (websites or blogs) to sell products from.
  • Drive traffic to your site (there are many ways).
  • Capture addresses of visitors to your site for legitimate no spam follow-up.
  • Convert prospects to buyers – and repeat buyers.
  • Deliver your products or services.
  • Collect your money.

Each of these steps has multiple techniques or strategies to get them accomplished, so yes, the concept is simple, but knowing how to implement the strategies and techniques to get it done is something else again.

I urge you to learn the basic strategies and techniques of internet marketing and doing business on the internet before you commit a great deal of time, and money, without knowing what you are doing. The learning curve is steep – and expensive. I thought internet marketing my service and products on the internet would be easy. I was wrong. Oh sure, you can find any number of “Internet Gurus” who will give (or sell) you a “can’t fail” system but you can be pretty sure of two things:

  • You will be offered “upgrades” or “supporting programs” which will be costly.
  • The “Internet Guru” will have given (or sold) the “can’t fail” system to hundreds, maybe thousands, of other people, many of whom have a lot of experience and knowledge of internet marketing. They will be your competition.

Think about that for a minute. Do you need, or can you afford, upgrades or supporting programs? How can you be sure that your site will be at the top of the rankings, and your conversion rate such that you don’t lose any valuable visitors (prospects) that do find your site? I’d like to see if I can help. I’m going to set up a series of Ezine Articles that will cover the basics, and provide some references to additional resources.

Here is what the series will cover:

  • Have a plan – know what you want to do, and plan how to do it.
  • How to select products to sell on the internet (if you don’t have your own).
  • How to do market research to determine what products people are searching for.
  • How to build effective platforms (websites &/or blogs) to sell these products from.
  • Where you can get pre-built sites if you can’t – or don’t want to – do it yourself.
  • Driving traffic to your site (critical). There are many ways – we’ll cover 8 or 10.
  • Building a list, and communicating effectively with autoresponders.
  • Converting prospects to buyers – and repeat buyers.
  • And finally – My thoughts on MLM (Multi-Level-Marketing).

Stay tuned for the series (Business – Small Business).

Until the next article, Here’s to You, and to your Success!

With some of the best websites offering latest offerings from the fashion houses at unbelievably low prices, you are left to wonder if it indeed is a reality.

You must have heard your friend talking big about her latest designer sunglasses, which she bought by spending lots of money from her dedicated monthly savings. However, you don’t need to resort to such measures, as the same look and feel can be yours at ridiculous prices that are a fraction of what your friend spent.

Knockoff price fashion sunglasses are sold in the form of replica sunshades that are inspired by latest designs from fashion powerhouses, like Oakley, Bvlgari, Dior, Fendi, Prada, etc. Normally, the original designer sunglasses are available at extremely high prices that were unheard of for sunshades if you go half-a-decade back. However, the connoisseurs of branded items do not think twice before spending such amounts on this fashion accessory.

However, majority of the buyers belong to the category of budget spenders who do not have this much amount to spare for a pair of sunglasses. However, fashion is one thing that everyone likes to be associated with. Therefore, for such lesser mortals, knockoff price fashion sunglasses offer the best tradeoff.

For starters, looks-wise, you won’t find any difference between the imitation and the authentic designer sunshades. Comfort-wise, replica sunglasses match the best in the industry. And protection-wise, these inspired sunnies are next to none while preserving your eyes and under-eye region from the harmful UV rays.

Occasionally, you may be in for a pleasant surprise in the form of freebies and extra discount offered by some of the trusted websites. Your shopping experience is made even more unforgettable with the safety and security of your financial information that is guaranteed by the best of websites.

Therefore, while you are looking for knockoff price fashion-sunglasses on the Internet, make sure that the above-mentioned features are offered by the website that you have finalized. Your order arrives within days at the place of your choice. So, where’s the place left for the authentic designer sunglasses?

You can pick up great deals online no matter what you are looking for. For example, if your kids need new shoes, take a look at some of the online retailer who specialize in footwear for the family. You can pick up a great looking pair of Uggs for kids at greatly lower prices than what you would pay if you were to shop at your local mall. Ugg boots have been around since the early 2000s and they are incredibly warm very stylish and are now available in a wide assortment of styles and colors.  Uggs are generally quite expensive in boutiques, but you can pick them up online for prices that are very affordable, to say the least. Uggs are designed rugged, are very comfortable and there is little doubt that your children will love them.

If you happen to have a baby at home, you can find great prices and a wide selection of baby products such as little giraffe blankets and hooded towels on the internet at incredible savings. Little giraffe products are made of the softest materials and many of the blankets are trimmed with a lush satin border that babies find irresistible.

You can also find items for yourself as well when shopping on the web. If handbags are your thing, you can find great deals on designer purses such as longchamp handbags that are not only in style, but are sure to turn a few heads when you carry them.

The next time you are considering driving to your local mall to do some shopping, reconsider and take a look around on the internet. Not only will you find exactly what you are looking for, you will undoubtedly save yourself a bundle of money.
