Jil Sander – Company History
Though considered as the Queen of German Fashion, Jil Sander is one popular designer who caters to international fashion designs. The products she sells all carry an international touch, and although her company is nestled beautifully in the northern part of the German city, Hamburg, the clothes and fragrances she markets are all manufactured in Milan, Italy.
Jil Sander was born in Wesselburen, Germany on November 27, 1943. She entered the fashion industry when she started working as a fashion journalist at McCall’s in Los Angeles, as well as for two other magazines in the city, Constanze and Petra. Growing Up
Klein, born November 19, 1942, was taught by his mother to love fashion. He would often accompany her when she went shopping in New York City for affordable clothes. From an early age he knew he wanted to be a fashion designer, and taught himself how to sketch and sew.
Before he turned twenty, he graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. He married Jayne Centre and began working as an apprentice sketching European coat designs for his employer Dan Millstein to copy. Klein, however, disdained the idea that the normative American practice was to imitate European fashion and longed to start his own company. He believed that original fashion ideas could come out of the States and he was just the innovator to make it happen. Read more
Karl Lagerfeld – Forefront of Fashion
Born in 1938, Karl Lagerfeld is a famous fashion designer considered by most critics and consumers as one of Germany’s most outstanding fashion experts. He belongs to a wealthy family in Hamburg, Germany, but it was in Paris where he studied fashion designing informally. His name came out of the news when he won the title “the Wool Secretariat” in 1954 for a piece of wool coat he himself designed.
Lagerfeld started working as a fashion designer in 1954 for Pierre Balmain. He ended his term there in 1957, and one year later he transferred to the House of Patou. He also worked as a freelance designer at Krizia. From the period of 1959 to 1978, he worked for Chloe, and it was during that time when he started designing delicate furs for the Fendi collection. Hailed as the founding father of the Italian fashion, Nino Cerruti first saw his interest and passion with designing products and accessories for the fashion market when he was still in his 20s. He was born in Biella, Italy and at that young age, he took control of the textile mills owned by his family.
